Malnutrition is an ever present issue that impacts more children than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. But wait, through Project Peanut Butter, there is a very real, effective solution available. In 2004, with the help of Dr. Mark Manary, this program has developed a locally made, ready to use therapeutic food (RUTF). This food provides the neccessary nutrition to children in the sub-Saharan African region.
When this ready to use therapeutic food originated trials were used to test the efficacy. It was found to have a 95% success rate compared to the 25-40% that had recovered using traditional hospital therapies.
In 2007, the United Nations, World Health Organization, and World Food Programme recognized RUTF as the gold standard of care for severely malnourished children worldwide.
