Hello everyone!Welcome to the We Dish Nutrition blog!
Since my December 2014 graduation from Benedictine University’s combined master’s and dietetic program, I have been involved in the trenches of nutrition for 10+ years, spreading the word of small, lifestyle health changes.

I am excited to be translating the science behind nutrition trends, myths and headlines and  look forward to using this blog to articulate sound nutrition advice and connect with a variety of readers.

With a diverse background in mathematics, business, and communications, in May 2013, I received my bachelors degree in Nutritional Sciences with a concentration in dietetics at Cornell University. In December 2014, I completed a Combined Master’s and Dietetic Internship Program at Benedictine University.
Food has always been my first love, and my growing interest in the sciences and medical field is what drove me to dietetics. As the years pass and my experience grows, my love for dietetics has grown as well. The number of opportunities the profession presents – from medicine to public health to business – matches my diverse background and experiences in different fields. It is my hope that as I explore the different opportunities dietetics offers I may share my passion for food and nutrition and enlighten all the individuals I meet along the way.

Jessica: Future GMO-Free RD

Jessica Gerne is an aspiring dietitian currently attending Montclair State University. Her interest in nutrition started on a trip, overseas in Dublin, Ireland back in 2009. She took notice to how their food was handled and was surprised to find out that America didn’t follow the same regulations and laws. When she came back to the states her interest grew even more when her father decided to convert a majority of their backyard into a small sustainable farm.

While her goal is to encourage those around her to become more educated about what they are eating, her true passion lies in spreading the awareness about GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).

In addition to studying Dietetics, she also works at Overlook Medical Center, a Fortune 500 company, as a Dietetic Assistant. It is here where Jessica applies her knowledge and skills by doing nutritional evaluations, menu planning, and teaching patients how to make healthier choices when it comes to their diet. Her position allows her to utilize her ability outside of the classroom in a clinical setting.

In her spare time, she manages her own blog, “Lily’s Way”, to help educate people about the health benefits of the ingredients in their food. Her site contains articles about making better food choices as well as product reviews for organic/GMO free foods.
